Last week TCM held a mini-marathon of Newman movies, of which I only caught Hud (I like him best when he's a cowboy). I had to miss this beautiful line-up because I have things like "school" and "a life" to attend to. But in a perfect world, I could retreat to a fortress of solitude and watch Paul Newman all day, and when I left, the world would be exactly the same. This would especially apply to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
When I was ten and I saw this movie for the first time, I thought that Butch and Sundance were meant for each other; of course, this was before I knew about heterosexual life partners (meet the prime example). I feel bad for the other characters in the movie, as they're all just peripheral to the platonic romance of those beautiful outlaws. Etta? Who the hell is Etta? I'll tell you: she's an interruption in the love song of the Sundance Kid. theirloveissopure.

Would it be reasonable to say that Etta is a macguffin?
Utterly. She shows up, talks some, strips, and wears really great hats. She is the division of love.
