ampersandology: film. culture. words.

| ABOUT |

Your faithful narrator.

I began this blog with one mission: to talk about culture in the only way I know how.

I wanted it to be more than a collection of things I was interested in. I'm fixated on finding the connections between the cracks of culture: the obscure cultural stories you'd never considered, the strings that bind the strangest bedfellows, the films that have more in common than you'd think. If you really want to know a society, cracking open the history books will only get you so far: you've got to understand its culture.

So that's more or less how I see the world: a series of interconnected cultural moments. That was the hidden advantage of a liberal arts education: it gave me a big picture understanding I now use with abandon, mapping out cultural blueprint like it's going out of style.

It's Ampersandology: the study of the 'ands' in our cultural world.

About the Author: Jillian Butler is a writer, sometimes editor and graduate student working in Toronto, Canada. She has been known to devote too much thought to cultural pathways. As a result, she hasn't genuinely enjoyed a movie, television show or novel since 2004. A 2010 SSHRC recipient, she received her B.A. in Honours English and is currently attending graduate school. She has written for The Scope, Board of Trade Magazine, FASHION magazine, Slant Magazine, Qwerty and Paragon, and earning Honorable Mention and second place respectively  in the 2010/2009 Cuffer Short Fiction Prize. Since 2008, she's been working closely with social platforms and new media.

Ampersandology has been her roost since 2007. If you'd like to contact her about guest-blogging, article ideas or any other queries, email her. She just loves mail.
