I managed to catch the 1935 version of A Midsummer Night's Dream today on TCM, and besides the pleasure of seeing Olivia deHavilland picking scenery out of her teeth and a post-gangster James Cagney trying his hand at Bottom, there was this disturbing nugget.
Mickey Rooney starring as a preteen Puck.
Yup. That Mickey Rooney.
And apparently, he was reprising his role from the Broadway production. It's surreal, to say the least, to hear a kid who's not shaving yet proclaim his amusement at what a tangled web we weave, when we practice to deceive. So bizarre.
Wow, I forgot he married Ava Gardner. Go figure.
